Proximity sensors, Arduino, LED display, rechargeable battery, framed. 9 × 11 in.
When you stand in front of this piece, its proximity sensors detect you and a red LED timer starts counting. The timer never resets. It keeps a running total of every hour, minute, and second anyone has spent looking at the work, and that total travels with it from wall to wall and owner to owner.
The time people spend looking at art is usually treated as a measure of its worth. Here that time is the artwork itself, and every viewer adds to it. Does the value go up?
The timer runs on an Arduino kit coded by the artist and is powered by a rechargeable battery.
