About
Mark Girgis is a Los Angeles based artist and creative director. His art practice is motivated by a deeply personal exploration that begins with his childhood in New Jersey and New York, his roots as an Egyptian-American, and moves through the experiences of his adulthood.
Working in painting and mixed media on paper and papyrus, he combines religious iconography with a bold, graphic visual language. That language comes from his training in graphic design at the School of Visual Arts and a career spent building brands such as Nickelodeon and leading creative teams. His current series, Making Money, Making Art (2026), looks at what it means to make a living as an artist today.
Original works, prints, and limited editions are available to collect. Studio visits upon request.
Artist Statement
My work starts where I did: on the floor with coloring books, cartoons on the television, and the icons of the Coptic Church all around me. I grew up between two visual worlds. One was American pop culture, signaling progress and the future. The other was the saints, crosses, and ancient symbols of my Egyptian heritage.
Both my younger brother and I lost our parents at an early age. As young artists in NYC we both experienced 911 firsthand. The loss and trauma became the questions underneath everything I make. It led me into years of research on religion, consciousness, language, and the afterlife. I continue to study how my own faith and science explains what comes after death, and how the ancient Egyptians mapped the journey of the soul. I use iconography and religious imagery as a language for things I can’t say directly.
My work lives in the space between innocence and grief, the familiar and the sacred, the ancient and the now. My hope is that it feels playful at first glance and heavier the longer you look. That is how memory works for me too.
