Triptych: Kintsugi Skate Decks
Printed design, gold leaf, 3 of 3
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of mending broken pottery with gold, so the repair becomes part of the object’s beauty instead of something to hide. I learned about it on a trip to Japan, and this triptych came out of that.
Each deck carries its own graphic print in porcelain blue: a wave pattern, lotus blossoms, and a dragon. I hand-carved fractures across each surface and filled them with gold leaf. Because the carving is done by hand, no two decks are alike.
The three decks are sold together as a set and are meant to hang side by side. Each one is labeled and signed by the artist on the back.
